Pune: Thousands of devotees took part in the 'visarjan' processions on Anant Chaturdashi,which started amidst heavy police security from Tilak statue in Mandai area at 10.20 am on Sunday.
The first five 'manache' Ganapatis - Kasba Peth,Tambdi Jogeshwari,Guruji Taalim,Tulshibaug and Kesariwada - were led through Laxmi Road by an assortment of enthusiastic youth groups and volunteers,sporting saffron flags,vermillion faces and jumbo 'dhols.'The processions showcased the best of Maharashtra's cultural tradition amidst loud chants of 'Ganapati Bappa morya Pudhchya varshi lavkar ya!!"
While intricate 'rangolis' and a robust performance of the traditional martial art 'vetra-charma'garnered much attention,volunteers from all walks of life went a step ahead to spread messages on environmental safety,female foeticide and Child Rights.The beginning of the end of the 10-day Ganeshotsav embodied a mix of culture,tradition and social issues.
